Welcome to my new series…Neighborhood Spotlight. Every so often I will choose a neighborhood in my region to highlight and give it’s history. First up….
Murray Hill
Murray Hill is an historic neighborhood in Annapolis, MD.
Named after lawyer, James Murray (1751-1866), Murray Hill got its beginnings back in 1651 when Ricard Acton, a carpenter, was issued a certificate for a 100 acre tract of land on the north side of a creek, then called Acton’s Creek, now known as Spa Creek. Acton Hall (pictured below) is Murray Hills most famous landmark was built in 1760. In 1837 James Murray bought the land and moved into Acton Hall. By 1890 James Murray’s heirs had sold off parts of the original estate. A survey laid out streets and lots for sale in what has now become the modern neighborhood of Murray Hill.
Murray Hill is now over 125 years old, and the community celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2015. It is a beautiful collection of homes built in a variety of periods and architectural styles. The many tree-lined streets and views of Spa make it a very desirable community to live in.
Murray Hill is one of the cornerstone neighborhoods in the City of Annapolis. Given it’s central location, residents have easy access to shops and restaurants along both West Street and Main Street, as well as quick access to the water. It’s the walkability and history of Murray Hill that continues to draw Marylanders (both old and new) to make their home here.
